Instructions for Using a Servo Tester
Servo testers are very useful for exercising your servos and
Electronic Speed Control (ESC) without the need to turn on your transmitter,
and you do not even need your receiver. The
servo tester will put out a signal just like the signals normally sent by your
receiver to the servos or ECS. The knob
on the servo tester will change the signal just like moving your transmitter
stick would change the signal going to a servo or ESC.
To use the tester to operate an ESC and motor, the only plug connected to the
tester is the plug from the ESC that normally goes to the receiver. That plug can be inserted on the pins labeled
S1 or S2. (It makes no difference
which one you use.) The plug should be
installed with the signal wire (normally white or orange) on the top pin,
labeled Servo. That will put the negative
wire (normally colored black or brown) on the bottom pin (closest the circuit
board), and the positive (red) wire will be on the center pin. Set the tester knob on 0, and connect the ESC
to motor leads. When you connect the
battery to the ESC it will power up. It
should react the same way does when powered up using the radio gear with the
throttle stick in the minimum power position.
You can now spin up the motor by turning the servo tester knob. No receiver or transmitter is needed. This is a great way to test motors on the
bench.
To use the tester to evaluate a servo or adjust a
control linkage,
connect a battery to the set of pins labeled BATT. The red or plus wire should connect to the
center pin, and the black lead should connect to the lower (with the tester
knob up) pin. That pin is closest to the
circuit board when looking at the pin end of the tester. Plug a servo into the pins labeled S1 or
S2. The plug should be installed with
the signal wire (normally white or orange) on the top pin, labeled Servo. That will put the negative wire (normally
colored black or brown) on the bottom pin (closest the circuit board), and the
positive (red) wire will be on the center pin.
Set the tester knob on 5 (mid position) and when the servo tester is
powered up the servo will go to center position.
